Birth defects...Spinal Cord
Birth defects of the central nervous system are called neural tube defects (NTDs). NTDs include conditions called spina bifida, anencephaly and encephalocele. They are all present at birth and are due to a problem with the development of the brain and/or spinal cord in the developing baby (fetus).
Neural tube defects are birth defects of the brain, spine, or spinal cord. They happen in the first month of pregnancy, often before a woman even knows that she is pregnant. The two most common neural tube defects are spina bifida and anencephaly. In spina bifida, the fetal spinal column doesn't close completely.
Spina bifida is a type of birth defect called a neural tube defect. It occurs when the bones of the spine (vertebrae) don't form properly around part of the baby's spinal cord. Spina bifida can be mild or severe. The mild form is the most common.
Spina bifida is a birth defect that happens when a baby's backbone (spine) doesnot form normally. As a result, the spinal cord and the nerves that branch out of it may be damaged. The term spina bifida comes from Latin and literally means "split" or "open" spine.
It is the most common neural tube defect in the United States—affecting 1,500 to 2,000 of the more than 4 million babies born in the country each year. An estimated 166,000 individuals with spina bifida live in the United States.
A detailed ultrasound scan of the baby when you are around 18-20 weeks pregnantcan detect almost all babies with a neural tube defect (95%). ... Most women use this ultrasound scan to screen for neural tube defects rather than have the screening blood test. Ultrasound scans are safe
(1991) Use of folic acid for prevention of spina bifida and other neural tube defects: 1983–1991. MMWR. 40:513–516. (1992) Recommendations for the use of folic acid to reduce the number of cases of spina bifida and other neural tube defects. MMWR. 41:1–8.
Neurological impairment is common, including:
Muscle weakness of the legs, sometimes involving paralysis.
Bowel and bladder problems.
Seizures, especially if the child requires a shunt.
Orthopedic problems — such as deformed feet, uneven hips and a curved spine (scoliosis)
From the beginning I am telling U that your Healthy habits are the only solution to avoid defective births.. I have seen number of couples are Sad by seeing their Defective child.
Please follow healthy habits to enjoy with your Healthy child
My advise
1.... The unborn child needs vitamins, minarals ect... which mother has to supply
2.... Folic acid needed to the child for proper development
3... Water also needed to the child to carry needed nutrients.to the nervous system
